How did you get into FM/ Accidental FM?

My path to facilities management was both accidental and predestined. Growing up, I spent
a great deal of time with my grandfather, Hank Robinson Jr., a skilled tradesman who taught
me the value of hands-on problem-solving and maintaining just about anything. Those early
experiences led me to project management in commercial construction, where I specialized
in restaurant builds. After COVID disrupted that industry, I joined Jupiter Hotel in 2022 to
support an 81-room remodel and discovered a passion for facilities maintenance and
troubleshooting. As Jupiter’s facilities department expanded, I stepped into a leadership role
overseeing its four buildings and the teams that keep them running. With Jupiter’s support,
I earned an Associate of Applied Science in Facilities Maintenance Technology from Portland
Community College. I’m excited to continue growing through IFMA and, in time, mentor the
next generation of facilities managers.

One Weird Experience in the industry

In September 2023, when longtime tenant and Portland entertainment icon Doug Fir played
its final show, I took on an additional building as Facilities Director, along with its deferred
maintenance challenges. The following spring, Jupiter tasked us with creating a new
outdoor bar to fill the void and give guests another way to enjoy the property. Starting with
little more than a concrete slab, a floor drain, and a single 20-amp outlet, the Bar Manager
and I had the creative freedom to design and build something unique. Through
resourcefulness and out-of-the-box problem-solving, we added running water, refurbished
keg coolers for six taps, installed on-site carbonation, and incorporated lighting and patio
misters to enhance the guest experience. It was one of the most unusual, challenging, and
rewarding projects of my facilities management career, combining my love of building
things with finding creative solutions to real-world problems.

Highlight of your facility or operation

The highlight of my role at Jupiter is the diversity of projects our business model presents.
Managing both a 1964 motor lodge and a modern 2018 hotel brings unique challenges, along
with the commercial spaces we oversee, including the award-winning HeyLove bar. We’re
also nearing completion of the remodel at 830 East Burnside, the former home of the iconic
Doug Fir Lounge, which we anticipate reopening in early 2027. Balancing these projects with
the day-to-day operations of our hotels and event spaces keeps my work engaging and
rewarding. I’m continually learning new aspects of facilities and hotel management, which
makes every day an opportunity to grow.
