How did you get into FM/ Accidental FM?

I got into facility management accidentally—like many of us. I was working from home selling lighting part-time when a friend connected me with a part-time receptionist role, which became my introduction to the industry. When the 2008 market crash hit and the property went back to the bank, I returned to selling lighting until the market declined further.

I later joined TSA, working early mornings, when that same friend reached out again about a part-time property administrator role. I ended up balancing both positions for a while before transitioning fully into property management. From there, I quickly moved into an assistant property manager role, and soon after joined SKB when they brought management in-house.

Now, nearly 12 years later, it’s amazing to reflect on how quickly that ‘accidental’ start turned into a fulfilling career. I’ve been very fortunate—and I truly enjoy what I do… most days.

One off weird experience in the industry?

One of the weirdest things about FM is the history you uncover—especially in older buildings. Case in point, in the Leftbank Building, there’s an old bomb shelter in the basement that a previous owner turned into a very unique private room—think red velvet curtains, mirrors, a dance floor, and built-in seating… plus a full bathroom and even laundry.

Let’s just say it earned the nickname “the red room of pain.” No one really knows the full story, but the rumors are… interesting. It’s definitely one of my favorite—and most unexpected—icebreakers when giving tours.

What is a highlight from your facilities or operations career?

Honestly, the biggest highlight for me has been the people. In facility management, you meet so many individuals, vendors, tenants, employees and while some come and go, others stick around and become part of your life in a bigger way. A lot of those professional relationships have turned into real friendships, and that’s what makes this job so rewarding for me
